The Mayflower left England in 1620 to take English and Dutch pilgrims to America. Their destination was the Virginia Colony but the ship was so damaged they were forced to land at Cape Cod. The Passengers lived on the ship for a few months, building shelters on land during the day, then returning to the ship at night.
One survivor from the Mayflower was John Howland. He went on to marry and had 7 children and 71 grandchildren. They formed the nucleus of the primary New England families. 2.5 million Americans are descended from John Howland including Roosevelt and Franklin. WInston Churchill through his mother Jenny Jerome was another Howland descendant.
