A hopper wagon (or hopper car) is a specialized railway freight car designed to transport loose bulk materials like coal, grain, aggregates, and ore. It features sloped floors and opening doors on the bottom or sides, allowing the cargo to "hop" or discharge quickly via gravity.
These wagons are divided into two primary categories and serve specific logistical functions:
- Open Hopper Wagons: Have an open top and are typically used for moisture-resistant, heavy cargo like coal, iron ore, and track ballast.
- Covered Hopper Wagons: Feature a roof with hatches to protect cargo from the elements. They are primarily used for foodstuffs like grain and sugar, as well as industrial materials like cement or plastic pellets.
Unloading is highly efficient; the wagons move over or adjacent to storage silos or conveyor belts, open their bottom gates, and let gravity empty the contents. Some modern variations—such as those used by VTG—utilize pneumatic or electrohydraulic controls for highly precise unloading.
