The Wasa (Vasa) was a large battleship intended to be the first of a series built to raise the prestige of the Swedish Navy, which up until then had consisted of smaller, lightly armed ships.
The Wasa sank within one nautical mile of the start of her maiden voyage in 1628 before she even left the Stockholm archipelago. She was raised in 1961 and is on permanant display in the city.
