Criss-crossed by rivers and dotted with wetlands, European geography poses significant military challenges and led the German Wehrmacht to develop the Schwimmwagen, an amphibious vehicle based upon the Ferdinand Porsche-designed Kübelwagen. With a 4-cylinder gasoline engine capable of 25hp, the Schwimmwagen featured the 80km\/h top speed on ground. The rear three-bladed screw propeller was lowered manually using a rod and provided water speed up to 10km\/ h.
